Intimate Greece: Meteora, Navagio, Lefkada and the memory of icons

Some countries you visit. Others you return to. For me, Greece belongs to the second kind — a geography that becomes familiar through missed ferries, frappés sipped at noon, and small churches you step into out of habit, no longer asking why. After a first guide organised by island chains , here is the sequel: a story rather than a list, built around a handful of images brought back from different trips. The intimate Greece, the one that won't fit on a map. Navagio, or beauty that erases itself Navagio, Zakynthos — the bay from the cliff viewpoint, August 2019. They call it Navagio , "the shipwreck". After the Santorini sunset, it is the most reproduced image of Greece: an impossible cove, a 200-metre wall of limestone, and at its foot, beached on the sand, the cargo ship Panagiotis — a 1980s smuggler abandoned there by the currents one October night in 1980. The photograph is everywhere. The place itself is changing. The wreck and the summer crowd, seen from a tour boat. Since 2022, the beach has been partially closed: repeated rockfalls, unstable cliff, drones forbidden. Boats no longer approach the shore — you contemplate Navagio from the deck, a few cable-lengths off, the way one contemplates a relic. Perhaps that is what had to happen. Absolute beauty, in Greece as elsewhere, has never coped well with the crowd. To taste the older Zante, you have to step aside: Porto Limnionas on the west coast, carved into grey rock; the blue caves of Cape Skinari at first light; or…
